Searching the San Juan County Court Docket
Colorado Judicial Branch Docket Search filtered to San Juan is the fastest way to check an upcoming hearing. It is free. The calendar covers both the San Juan County District Court and San Juan County Court. Still, a hearing list is not the whole file. For the dated record of filings and rulings, a searcher can turn to CoCourts, watching its current access terms and charges. Another option is to simply call the Clerk of Court for the San Juan County Combined Courts.
Work through the channels in that order. Shift course once the goal comes into focus:
- Choose San Juan County in the free state docket search and set a date range.
- Narrow the result by court type, party, lawyer, or the split parts of a case number.
- Read the latest setting, courtroom, hearing type, and appearance method.
- Use CoCourts or ask the clerk for the register of actions when case history is needed.
- Request the exact pleading, order, judgment, or certified copy from the clerk.
The official statewide search displays the public calendar interface shown below.
Its date and party filters are good for spotting a setting. They are no stand-in for the filed case record itself.
San Juan Docket Search Fields
Colorado's form lets a searcher cast wide or drill down to one case. One filter beyond the date is required. County works as the easiest local screen. A case number works better. The form splits out the four-digit year, class, and sequence. When the number is unknown, individual, business, and attorney modes offer other routes in.
| Field | Use in San Juan County | Search note |
|---|---|---|
| County | Select San Juan | Maps to court location 056 |
| Court Type | District or County | Match the case class when known |
| Date Range | Future or specific date | Add another filter |
| Case Number | Year, class, sequence | Example: 2024CV1 |
| Party or Business | Name-based search | Broaden spelling if needed |
The San Juan filtered result screen shows how the county view appears.
A printable result is handy to keep. Check again before you rely on it, because settings can change.
Inside a San Juan County Court Docket
A calendar result answers when and where. The deeper chronological record in Colorado is the register of actions. It can list the case number, assigned judge, county, scheduled proceedings, judgments, orders, decrees, criminal charges, pleas, findings, sentences, and every document filed. Some records or fields stay hidden when protection applies.
| Calendar field | Date, time, duration, hearing type, location, appearance type, and courtroom |
|---|---|
| Case identity | Party or business name, case number, class, and court |
| Register field | Filings, orders, settings, outcomes, and document list in date order |
| Not supplied by calendar | Pleading text, signed order image, full ledger, or complete event history |
| Official copy | A clerk-certified document, not a browser printout |
The CoCourts service provides a statewide case-data route.
Its informational case data is useful for a quick read. For anything official, verify with the originating San Juan County court.
Calendar Versus Register in San Juan
In San Juan, docket means two different things. The Judicial Branch uses the word for its public hearing schedule. The Public Access to Court Records Policy says register of actions for the dated case history. Mix up those layers and facts slip past you. A future hearing can show up with no hint of the motions behind it. A case with no hearing set may still carry a long register. It may also hold a final judgment.
- Docket
- The public list of scheduled Colorado court proceedings.
- Register of actions
- The chronological index of filings, orders, settings, and outcomes.
- Filed document
- The actual complaint, motion, order, or judgment behind an entry.
- Certified copy
- A reproduction authenticated by the court clerk.
The Colorado Judicial Online Payment interface is another separate system.
A payment lookup answers one narrow question. It does not supply the full San Juan County court docket, nor prove every case qualifies for online payment.
Courts That Keep Dockets in San Juan County
The San Juan Combined Courts share one courthouse and one clerk office. Even so, District Court and County Court stay separate tribunals. Silverton Municipal Court runs as a town court. It keeps its own clerk and calendar. Appeals travel to other courts on fresh docket paths.
| Court | Docket covers | Where to start |
|---|---|---|
| San Juan County District Court | Felony, general civil, domestic relations, probate, and juvenile matters | State docket search or Combined Courts clerk |
| San Juan County Court | Misdemeanor, state traffic, small claims, and county civil cases | State docket search or Combined Courts clerk |
| Silverton Municipal Court | Town code, municipal traffic, and parking matters | Municipal Clerk at Town Hall |
| Colorado Court of Appeals | Intermediate state appeals | Separate appellate case docket |
The official San Juan trial-court page groups the local District and County Courts.
A shared landing page does not merge the legal work or case classes of the two courts.
San Juan Docket Courtrooms
Local calendar results offer a routing clue. County Court settings show up in Courtroom A. District Court settings show up in Courtroom 1. Case classes back the split, with CR and CV usually pointing to District Court and M, T, C, and S pointing to County Court. DR and PR also sit with District Court.
Read both fields. The case class identifies the type of case, while the current result identifies the room and appearance method for that setting.
Never read a blank appearance field as remote attendance. The Sixth Judicial District tells parties to appear in person unless the court approves another method. A court order plus a current clerk confirmation beats an old calendar print every time.
How to Find Court Dates and Settings
The official courthouse profile places San Juan County's regular state docket on the first Thursday. That pattern helps pick a date range. It does not promise every matter lands on that day. Special hearings can fall elsewhere. So search the online calendar, read the latest order when one is available, and confirm any unclear or conflicting date with the clerk at 970-387-5790.
A setting result may read VIRTUAL, TELEPHONE, or IN PERSON. It may also show a blank appearance field. Only the court can authorize a change. An unruled motion to continue is not an approved reset. A lawyer's request does not erase the current date.
For jury duty, the San Juan jury information channel publishes the reporting view.
A jury reporting notice is separate from a party's case setting. Never use one to confirm a hearing.
When the San Juan Docket Clerk Is Closed
The local counter does not run a five-day week. Published hours are Monday noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday run 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., closed noon to 1 p.m. The office is closed Wednesday and Friday. State holidays shut it too. Email to sanjuanclerk@judicial.state.co.us and voicemail preserve a clear request. Neither one moves a court deadline.
On a closed day with an urgent issue, the Judicial Branch names the La Plata County Clerk of Court at 970-247-2304 as a fallback. Ask what help that office can give. The San Juan clerk keeps the San Juan County files. The Sixth District self-help coordinator can supply forms and process help. That aid does not extend to legal advice or certified records.
The Sixth District collections page offers a separate route for payments.
Collections staff handle eligible balances. The Combined Courts clerk answers docket and record questions.
Public Access to Court Dockets
Colorado court files answer to Judicial Branch access rules, not to any broad assumption that agency records sit open online. The baseline is public access unless law, court rule, or an order restricts it. Remote access is narrower than counter access. Both exclude protected material.
Colorado access framework. The Public Access to Court Records Policy defines remote register fields. Chief Justice Directive 05-01 anchors the policy. Title 24, Article 72, Part 7 addresses criminal record sealing. Children's Code access provisions restrict juvenile material.
Not every San Juan County court record is open. Sealed cases, juvenile matters, mental-health records, adoption files, and similar protected categories stay off the docket in many cases. Others appear with limited data. Redaction also strips Social Security numbers, account numbers, personal identification numbers, and protected victim information from otherwise public filings. So a search that returns no name does not prove that no case exists.
San Juan Cases by the Numbers
San Juan County runs small, and the numbers show it. The 2020 Census counted 705 residents. The 2024 estimate put the figure at 821. The Judicial Branch's FY2024 reporting offers one view. Its San Juan District Court row showed 70 filings and 68 terminations. Keep in mind those filings cover District Court alone. County Court and Silverton Municipal Court are left out, so they fall short of the county's full caseload.
Low volume does not shrink the court's work. San Juan County District Court handles a wide range of matters. Its docket includes felony, general civil, domestic, probate, and juvenile cases across its assigned range. The light caseload does help explain the limited counter schedule and the concentrated docket pattern.
The Sixth Judicial District offers useful context. It is no substitute for San Juan County data. Its FY2023 report lists 1,834 District Court filings and 4,713 County Court filings across Archuleta, La Plata, and San Juan Counties. The district staffs four district judges, three county judges, and two part-time magistrates. Sharing those resources spreads officials across a wide area. A San Juan case may involve a district official based outside Silverton. A La Plata or Archuleta docket still is not part of the San Juan County court docket.
Docket Records at the Clerk's Office
Samantha Wright serves as Clerk of Court and Jury Commissioner. Her Combined Courts office receives filings and updates the electronic record. It also maintains case files and issues copies and certifications. It supports court scheduling and accepts eligible payments too. Do not confuse it with the San Juan County Clerk and Recorder. That is a separate county office entirely.

Make your records request specific. Name the court, the case number if you have it, the caption, the approximate year, the exact document, and the copy type you want. Say whether you need inspection, a plain copy, certification, or exemplification. Get a quote before paying, and never send full sensitive identifiers through ordinary email.
The official clerk listing gives the local contact details that appear next.
When a web result lacks the case detail you need, that local clerk contact is the practical answer.
San Juan Court Record Copy Fees
The statewide Record/Document Request form lists the standard charges, and those numbers apply in San Juan County even though the local court page posts no fee sheet of its own. Before you pay for copies of any San Juan court docket or file, ask the clerk to confirm the total. Availability, delivery method, and any archive retrieval cost can change the final figure, so get those details settled first.
| Item | Published amount | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Calendar search | $0 | Upcoming settings only |
| Plain copy | $0.25 per page | Paper or electronic court copy |
| Certified or exemplified copy | $20 per document plus copying | Clerk-authenticated record |
| Name search | $5 | A case number may avoid it |
| Research or redaction | $30 per hour | In 15-minute units after the first hour |
CoCourts adds a vendor charge on top of any copy costs. Off-site retrieval is billed at actual cost when it is needed. One more distinction matters here. A transcript of judgment is a civil record item, not a word-for-word hearing transcript. A true hearing transcript is different. It usually comes through a court reporter process tied to a specific proceeding.
San Juan Court Records Since 1908
Silverton's Classical Revival courthouse has held the state court and clerk since 1908. Both offices sit upstairs. Native stone, pressed brick, paired columns, a clock tower, and a gilded bell cupola all speak to the town's mining-era growth. The building needed care, and it got it. Restoration ran from 1999 through 2007 and again in the early 2020s. The work renewed court space while keeping the historic fabric. Early public records and mining maps still live inside. That is why physical custody matters even with statewide electronic filing. The official courthouse profile documents the structure and its current court use.
Getting inside takes planning. A rear lift reaches ground-floor county offices, but the judicial facilities upstairs are reached only by stairs. Contact the clerk in advance to arrange an accommodation. Free video interpreting is available for official Colorado proceedings.
Other practical details simply are not published on the location page. A public terminal's location, visitor parking, recording rules, and the certified-copy cutoff are all things to ask about. Do not infer them from the building or grounds. The preserved early records on site also do not mean every old court file has been digitized. Give staff the year, court, caption, and desired document. They can then check local or off-site custody of the San Juan County court docket.
San Juan County Court Dockets by City
Silverton is the county seat and the only incorporated town in San Juan County. Its court docket splits into two paths. Town matters belong to Silverton Municipal Court at Town Hall. That includes municipal traffic, parking tickets, and ordinance cases. Anything under state law, from traffic and misdemeanors to felonies and civil filings, lands in the San Juan Combined Court at the courthouse.
Silverton Docket Search
Find the municipal schedule, ticket route, town clerk contacts, and the point where a case belongs in County or District Court.
Start by reading the tribunal named on your citation or notice. That one detail tells you which docket to check. The town payment form will not give you a full case history, and the state docket search does not cover Town of Silverton municipal cases.
Map and Directions to the San Juan County Courthouse
